Much of the Buffalo and Erie County Historical Society
(BECHS) Research Library catalog has been converted into machine-readable
(MARC) records and is now available online twenty-four hours a day at
http://www.wnylibraries.org.
There are MARC records for most of our books and about 1/3 of our manuscripts.
Our photograph collections are not listed in
this catalog!
Buffalo and Erie County Historical Society collections focus on local
history topics. To do a comprehensive search of all materials on a specific
topic or by a specific author, researchers must still utilize the card
catalogs in the Library reading room (open Wednesday-Saturday, 1-5 pm.)
Helpful hints on using the WNYLibraries.org
Virtual Union Catalog:
To conduct a search, click on the “Standard
Search” button (top left corner).
If you wish to search all the libraries listed at once, enter your search
term (key word, exact title, author-last name first) in the Search Term
area. Click on Go.
The search will take a couple of minutes. When the results are returned,
click on Details (right side of each returned heading) and you will
see the complete record (same format as an “old-fashioned card
catalog!).
If you wish to search only the BECHS Research Library catalog, go down
to the bottom of the screen and click on “Deselect All”.
This will remove all the check marks to the left of the library list.
Then click on the box to the left of Buffalo and Erie County Historical
Society Research Library, and enter your Search Term. You will retrieve
only records from our catalog (or you will retrieve nothing, if we do
not have what you seek).
About the WNYLibraries.org Virtual Union
Catalog:
Search for books, magazines, journals, and other resources available
in Western New York academic, public, school, and special libraries
- all from one search screen.
The 24 libraries included in this virtual union catalog are members
of the Western New York Library Resources
Council which serves libraries and its staff members in six counties
in the Western New York region: Chautauqua, Cattaraugus, Erie, Genesee,
Niagara, and Orleans. Staff from these member libraries volunteered
their time and energy to develop the search screens and help pages to
assist you in your search for local materials.
