This type of pottery was made from the 1870s to the 1920s. For the most part, the pieces were formed and decorated by hand. The creation of ceramic objects that were not only functional, but also beautiful, was the overriding philosophy of the art pottery movement.
Examples shown are expressed in the Arts and Crafts style. Characteristics of this style include matte glazes, minimal decoration and uncomplicated shapes. The beauty of these pieces lay in a harmony of form, color, and simplicity.
