The Ansonia and Calumet Buildings are two of the most important examples of Art Nouveau architecture remaining in the United States. In addition to their unique architectural expression, these buildings have played roles in Buffalo's revitalization. The Ansonia and an adjacent building were gutted and converted into apartments during the 1980s, one of the first such downtown conversions. The renovation of the Calumet as a restaurant and jazz venue sparked the renaissance of Chippewa Street in the 1990s.
