Simple searching can be done through the Search box, located at the top right of each page, while Advanced Search will allow for more refined results. Click resulting images to view entries from the collection. To view additional images for each entry, including larger images, click the arrow on the bottom right of the screen; the arrows are located on the top of the screen on subsequent pages. Help - Search Tips

In an attempt to maintain the integrity of the original documents, all information has been transcribed as in the Cost and Contract book. If you cannot locate names, please use truncated versions for better results.

Use the asterisk key '*' to truncate words. For instance, 'Del*' will return results with the word ‘Delaware’ anywhere in the record.

Use Quotation Marks to search specific phrasing.

Searching is not case sensitive.

Boolean Operators, such as 'AND', 'OR' and 'NOT', help limit searching.

• The ‘AND’ operator links individual pieces of information together; for example, ‘plans AND residences’ entered into a search box would return records containing both the word ‘plans’ and the word ‘residences’ anywhere in the record – effectively, records of residential structures that include floor plans.
• The ‘OR’ operator searches for two separate pieces of information concurrently; for example, ‘ plans AND residences’ entered into a search box would return records containing either the word ‘plans’ or the word ‘residences’ anywhere in the record – effectively, all records of residential structures and all records that include floor plans.
• TThe ‘NOT’ operator excludes a piece of information; for example, ‘plans NOT residences’ entered into a search box would return records that contain the word ‘plans’ anywhere in the record, but not the word ‘residences’ – effectively, all the records that include floor plans that are not residential structures.

By default, "All Fields" searches the full-text of each record. Use the first drop-down menu to limit searching by specific fields. Please view our Metadata Glossary, located under the Help menu, for more information about each field used in this collection.
